Event Description:  Join us for a 2-night, 2-day weekend training, where you can certify to take Girl Scouts on the water. There are three sessions offered for this training weekend that you will choose from: Basic/Council Properties: Canoe, Kayak, and Paddleboard; Basic/Council Properties: Sailing; or for those that are advanced boaters and want to join our watercraft facilitator team to teach future classes: Watercraft Instructor Training.

- These courses include both online and in-person training that must be completed to be considered certified.

 

- These classes are for registered adult volunteers.

- Credentials are good for five years from the completion date.

 

SESSION 1:
Combination Basic Skills Plus Watercraft Leader: Council Properties -Canoe/Kayak/Paddleboard

DESCRIPTION:

  • Learn all of the basic boat handling and rescue skills for canoeing, kayaking, and paddleboarding covered in both the Basic Skills class and in Paddling Watercraft Leader: Council Properties.
  • Participants may go from beginner to " take girls out" on council properties.
  • Successful demonstration of both paddling and rescue skills, and completing all portions of this class, meets the Safety Activity Checkpoints for leading paddling activities at GS-NCCP council properties for adult volunteers, and meets the criteria for Qualified Assistants/Co-Boating Leader for Ambassadors Girl Scout age 16 and over.
  • This class is a mandatory prerequisite for the Watercraft Leader - NC Waterways training.

SESSION 2:
Multi-level Sailing Class


DESCRIPTION:
GS-NCCP Sailing classes are small, customized classes for sailors of all levels. Each participant will have an individual development plan with criteria and skill requirements for the level they are seeking. The following levels will be offered:

1. Combination Basic Skills Plus Watercraft Leader: Council Properties I - Sailing.
This class will focus on sailing preparation, safety, and leading sailing in the cove at Camp Graham and within specified limits at Camp Hardee.

2. Watercraft Leader: Council Properties II - Sailing.
This class will focus on leadership of sailing activities beyond the cove at Camp Graham to the Water Treatment Plant and in a more expansive area at Camp Hardee.

3. NC Waterways Leader - Sailing
This class will include leadership of sailing activities on flat water sites away from NC Coastal Pines properties within North Carolina.

4. Sailing Facilitator cross-over.
This class will enable currently certified boating facilitators (Canoeing/Kayaking/Paddleboarding) to cross-over to Sailing Facilitator. Minimum age 18 and registered with GSUSA as an adult.

5. Motorboat Assessment
This class is available only to participants in #2-4 above. The Boat US online class for North Carolina MUST be completed prior to the training weekend. Minimum age 18 and registered with GSUSA as an adult.

This sailing class is for registered adult volunteers.
- Learn boat handling and rescue skills for Sunfish sailboats.
- This class is open to beginners as well as those with experience sailing and/or teaching sailing.
- Successful demonstration of both sailing and rescue skills, and completing all portions of this class, meets the Safety Activity Checkpoints for leading Sunfish sailing activities at the limits stated above for adult volunteers.

SESSION 3:
Watercraft Facilitator Training - Canoeing and Kayaking


DESCRIPTION:
- This weekend-long class is designed for volunteers who are excited about boating and are interested in becoming a paddling facilitator for GS-NCCP.
Mandatory prerequisites:
1) Completion of Watercraft Leader classes for both Council Properties and NC Waterways;
2) Demonstration of solo canoe and kayak skills by successfully paddling a figure-8 course; and
3) Willingness to join the Council's facilitator training team and co-teach a boating class at least once per season.

In this weekend-long class, participants will refine rescue skills, learn how to teach paddling strokes to new boaters, and practice teach elements of the Watercraft Training classes.

Digital access to facilitator materials will be provided prior to the class and participants are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the basic water rescue skills, paddling skills, and rescue skills taught in the Council Properties and NC Waterways classes.

Event Confirmation Packet/Details: All the details that you need to attend this event can be found in the event confirmation packet. Once it is finalized, you will see it when you go to the My Events page of your My GS account and select the event from the list. All registered participants will also receive a copy via email closer to the event date and after registration closes for the event. Please review the packet at least several days prior to the event so you will have time to adequately prepare for the event and to ask questions, if needed. 

 

Cancellation Policy 

  • For cancellations received by May 14, 2026, we will refund to original method of payment. 
  • For cancellations received between May 15, 2026 and May 28, 2026, we will refund to original method of payment minus $20 cancellation fee. 
  • In case of illness or family emergency, cancellations received by June 29, 2026 will be refunded to original method of payment minus cancellation fees and costs as applicable. 
  • Please send all cancellation requests to helpdesk@nccoastalpines.org. Requests will be processed based on the date received.
