Event Description: Join us for a 2-night, 2-day weekend training, where you can certify to take Girl Scouts on the water. There are four sessions offered for this training weekend that you will choose from: Basic/Council Properties: Canoe, Kayak, and Paddleboard; NC Waterways: Canoe, Kayak, and Paddleboard, Waterways: Sunfish Sailing; and a Watercraft Training Facilitator Crossover Course: Sunfish Sailing

 

Adults must be currently registered members with a current background check.

Registrants must attend the entire class in order to be watercraft certified.

 

Swim Test - all Watercraft Training Series participants are required to pass a basic swim test to demonstrate comfort in the water.  The swim test is comprised of the following components:

  • Swim any stroke for 25 yards without a life jacket.
  • Tread water for 1 minute without a life jacket.
  • Put on life jacket while treading water.
  • Swim any stroke for 25 yards with a life jacket.

 

Blended Learning:  All Watercraft Training Series courses utilize a blended learning format.  Participants complete online coursework prior to an in-person skill session.  Please note that the online work must be completed prior to the designated skill session in order to proceed to the in-person skill session.

 

Class Options:

 

Combination Basic Skills Plus Watercraft Leader: Council Properties -Canoe/Kayak/Paddleboard


Description:  In this weekend-long session, you will learn basic boat handling and rescue skills for canoeing, kayaking, and paddleboarding.  This class is intended to provide both the practice and instruction necessary to ensure that you have the paddling skills needed to maneuver a course efficiently. Successful completion of this course meets the Safety Activity Checkpoints for leading paddling activities at council properties.  This course includes both online and in-person training and is recommended for beginners as well as those who lack experience using specific steering strokes.  This training is intended for those who want to boat at GS-NCCP properties and is a prerequisite for the Watercraft Leader - NC Waterways training. This course includes both online and in-person training that must be completed to be considered certified. Sleeping accommodations and all Saturday and Sunday meals will be provided. Credentials are good for five years from the completion date.

 

Ambassador level Girls may attend Combination Basic Skills Plus Watercraft Leader: Council Properties -Canoe/Kayak/Paddleboard class by Contacting Lizz Mathews at (919)397-5249 or lmathews@nccoastalpines.org. This training is intended for those who want to boat at GS-NCCP properties and become a qualified assistant in Council Properties - Canoe/Kayak/Paddleboarding. This course includes both online and in-person training that must be completed to be considered certified. All Saturday and Sunday meals and sleeping accommodations will be provided. Credentials are good for five years from the completion date.  Successful completion of this course meets the Safety Activity Checkpoints for being a qualified assistant in paddling activities at council properties.

Watercraft Leader: NC Waterways - Canoe/Kayak/Paddleboarding  

 
Description:  This weekend-long training is an advanced module intended for volunteers who have previously completed the Watercraft Leader: Council Properties training (or equivalent) and are experienced and proficient in using specific paddling strokes to steer the craft.  Paddlers must demonstrate steering strokes while navigating a figure-8 course in both a canoe and a kayak as a prerequisite.  This training is NOT a basic skills or entry level program.  Participants will explore planning and emergency preparation considerations along with advanced rescue techniques. This course includes both online and in-person training that must be completed to be considered certified. All Saturday and Sunday meals and sleeping accommodations will be provided. Credentials are good for five years from the completion date.

 

Fees: $40.00

 

Please note:  All in-person events for GS-NCCP will follow the current GS-NCCP COVID 19 Guidelines. While our intent is to hold this event in-person as planned, events are subject to cancellation/rescheduling/adjustment based on safety guidelines from the Centers of Disease Control, state and local health department, and GS-NCCP. In the case that this event is cancelled/rescheduled/adjusted, registered participants will be notified via email.

 

Cancellation Policy

For cancellations received by August 21, 2025 we will refund to original method of payment.

For cancellations received between August 22, 2025  and September 15, 2025  we will refund to original method of payment minus $25 cancellation fee.

In case of illness or family emergency, cancellations received by 10 days after will be refunded to original method of payment minus cancellation fees and costs as applicable.
