The Girl Scout Difference

At Girl Scouts, she’ll get to lead her own adventure (it’s her world!) and team up with other girls in an all-girl environment to choose the exciting, hands-on activities that interest her most.

Research shows that girls learn best in an all-girl, girl-led, and girl-friendly environment. Girl Scouts is a place where she’ll practice different skills, explore her potential, take on leadership positions—and even feel allowed to fail, dust herself off, get up, and try again.

The inclusive, all-female environment of a Girl Scout troop creates a safe space where girls can try new things, develop a range of skills, take on leadership roles, and just be themselves.

Girl Scouts takes the potential of girls, combines it with robust skill-building programming, and adds caring adult mentors and strong role models.

Everything a Girl Scout does centers around STEM, the outdoors, development of life skills, and entrepreneurship, and is designed to meet her where she is now and to grow along with her.

Whether she’s building a robotic arm, coding her first app, building a shelter in the backcountry, or packing for her first hike, a Girl Scout has an exciting array of choices to suit her interests at every age.

At Girl Scouts, “Can I?” quickly turns into “I will!” as girls transform their ideas into action, turn their questions into adventure, and grow their confidence through practice. And with more than 60 million other G.I.R.L.s to cheer them on every step of the way, there’s no limit to what she can accomplish.

Girl Scouts works. It’s the best leadership experience for girls in the world for one very good reason: because it’s girl-led!

Delivering Fun with Purpose

Our Girl Scout Leadership Experience is a one-of-a-kind leadership development program for girls, with proven results. It is based on time-tested methods and research-backed programming that help girls take the lead—in their own lives and in the world.

The Girl Scout Leadership includes a collection of engaging, challenging, and fun activities like earning badges, going on awesome trips, selling cookies, exploring science, getting outdoors, and doing community service projects.

The idea is to learn by doing, and at Girl Scouts, she’ll do lots of it.

Along the way, she’ll gain important skills in four areas that form the foundation of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience:

Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM)

Life Skills

Entrepreneurship

While she may be exposed to these subjects at school, in other youth programs, or even on her own, at Girl Scouts she’ll experience them in a unique way that puts her on a path to a lifetime of leadership, adventure, and success. And because our program is girl-led, girls decide what they’ll do, together.

The results? A lifetime of leadership!

In fact, being a Girl Scout helps girls thrive in five key ways. As a Girl Scout, she:

Displays positive attitudes

Seeks challenges and learns from setbacks

Forms and maintains healthy relationships

Learns to identify and solve problems in her community

With Girl Scouts, she’ll be inspired to discover her talents and passions in a safe and supportive all-girl setting while doing more than she ever thought she could, dreaming bigger than she ever imagined, and—oh, yeah—changing the world, for herself and for others.

Who knew rock climbing, building robots, or selling cookies could help her do all that?

Giving back is the Girl Scout way…just ask Girl Scout Troop #1783 from Harnett County! These go-getters wanted to make a difference in their community after learning about the many children hospitalized at UNC Children’s Hospital for long-term treatment. To help bring comfort and lift spirits, the girls worked together to create “art bags” full of fun, creative activities to engage and inspire the young patients. The girls worked with local businesses to get the supplies donated and each girl crafted hand-made get well cards to include with each bag. Working as a team, these Girl Scouts learned how even the smallest of gestures can make a big difference in the lives of others.

Talk about using creative thinking skills to solve problems! The Gadget Girls, an all girls robotics team sponsored by the council, unleashed their inner innovators by using their STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) skills to compete in the annual FIRST Robotics Competition. Under strict rules, limited resources, and an intense time limit, the Gadget Girls were challenged to raise funds, design a team "brand," hone teamwork skills, and build and program industrial-size robots to play a difficult field game against like-minded competitors. Working together, these Girl Scouts are actively breaking down gender barriers while pursuing their STEM passions!

After selling 10,000 boxes of Girl Scout Cookies, Girl Scout Troop #285 used their cookie proceeds to fund a once-in-a-lifetime travel experience - a backpacking trip through the Appalachian Trial. The girls challenged themselves with a four-day backpacking trip taking their love for travel and the outdoors to the next level. These risk-takers took a 20-mile bike ride on the Virginia Creeper, became proficient in setting-up tents, meal planning and cooking, gear selection, packing packs, and Leave No Trace principles.

Girl Scout Daisies of Troop #4813 from Craven County embarked on an exciting adventure through the wilderness by venturing through a portion of Croatan National Forest. In their troop meetings, the girls had been discussing outdoors skills such as preparing for a hike, bringing safety items, and recognizing wildlife. While many of the girls hadn't spent much time outdoors, each supported the other in tackling this new challenge. The girls had a great time on their outdoor adventure while building important leadership skills such as teamwork, resiliency, independence, and critical thinking skills.
