Over 40 Girl Scouts Cadettes, Seniors, and Ambassadors from the North Carolina Coastal Pines council learned everything they needed to know to go on their first camping adventure at the Outdoor Skills Progression Series, Setting Up Camp. The event served girls grades 6 through 12 in Vance County and provided them with hands-on activities that helped expose girls to the vast and exciting world of the great outdoors. The event serves as an opportunity to get girls outside and beyond their comfort zone while experiencing all nature has to offer.
The Outdoor Skills Progression Series offered by the council helps girls develop the necessary camping and outdoor skills needed in order to plan and attend their first camping trip. The girls learned basic outdoor skills like knot tying, setting up tents, and packing up camp efficiently. These outdoor skills promote teamwork, inventiveness, and help girls seek and embrace challenges while becoming better problem solvers.
According to the Girl Scout Research Institute (GSRI), when girls participate in outdoor activities through Girl Scouting they learn important life skills such as cooperation and team building. Outdoor activities also allow girls to recognize the value of working together and learning to make decisions that benefit the whole group. Additional life skills that can be gained through outdoor experiences include building effective teams, learning to be accountable for shared goals, and showing recognition for others’ contributions and accomplishment.
By providing hands-on environmental and outdoor learning experiences, girls develop a lifelong understanding of the world and a richer understanding around the importance of its care and conservation. Many girls carry these lessons and experiences with them as they influence and shape their leadership experience both as a Girl Scout and as member of society.
Girl Scouts – North Carolina Coastal Pines offers girls once-in-a-lifetime experiences all while having fun in a safe, girl-only, and girl-led environment. Girls can join Girl Scout troops as well as attend outdoor and environmental events as an individual member. Additional outdoor opportunities are available at our summer resident and day camps; registration is open now.
