120 Girl Scouts Cadettes, Seniors, and Ambassadors from the North Carolina Coastal Pines council learned emergency preparedness, self-defense, and shelter-building skills at the Zombie Preparedness Academy weekend long event. The event served girls grades 6 through 12 and provided them with hands-on activities while enjoying and exploring the vast and exciting world of the great outdoors. The event served as an opportunity to get girls outside and beyond their comfort zone while experiencing all nature has to offer in a fun and creative setting.
Girls who attended the Zombie Preparedness Academy learned important and versatile survival skills they might need to know in case of a zombie invasion or while spending a week camping with family and friends. Girls also participated in archery and watercraft challenges. Survival skills were introduced and mastered during the beginning of the weekend, with the remaining days spent competing in outdoor team challenges. The event ended with a fun and festive celebration where girls donned their best zombie costumes and makeup. By using innovative and unique ways to engage girls in the outdoors and learn survival skills, girls become more comfortable and knowledgeable about nature and the natural world.
Outdoor events are offered by the council to help girls develop the necessary outdoor skills needed to pursue a for a variety of nature activities and interests. These outdoor skills promote teamwork, inventiveness, and help girls seek and embrace challenges while becoming better problem solvers.
By providing hands-on environmental and outdoor learning experiences, girls develop a lifelong understanding of the world and a richer understanding around the importance of its care and conservation. Many girls carry these lessons and experiences with them as they influence and shape their leadership experience both as a Girl Scout and as member of society.
Girl Scouts – North Carolina Coastal Pines offers girls once-in-a-lifetime experiences all while having fun in a safe, girl-only, and girl-led environment.
