Girl Scout Volunteer ‘Takes the Cake’ as a finalist for National Girl Scout Cookie Recipe Contest

Girl Scouts – North Carolina Coastal Pines is pleased to announce that member Deborah Tharrington of Bunn, N.C., is one of 16 finalists for an online national recipe contest.

Taste of Home and Girl Scouts of the USA have teamed up to present the first-ever national Girl Scout Cookie recipe contest.  Through March 2 this year, Girl Scout Cookie lovers created and submitted their favorite dessert recipes using Girl Scout cookies as an ingredient, for the chance to win a cash prize.

Tharrington’s winning recipe, Molly's Mini Lemon Shortbread Puddings, is a spin-off of a lemon pie she has been baking for the last eight years.  Although her favorite Girl Scout Cookie is the Caramel Delight®, Tharrington shared it was her youngest daughter’s favorite cookie that inspired the recipe – Lemonadesä.

“We used the Lemonade cookie as our crust and then added the filling from a family favorite lemon pie recipe to go with it.  We chose it because it is easy and something Molly can make herself,” shared Tharrington.

Chefs of all levels, from home cooks to established professionals, were encouraged to submit Girl Scout Cookie-inspired entries in one of four categories: (1) cakes, pies, cupcakes, (2) cookies, brownies, bars, (3) pudding, ice-cream, gelatin desserts, and (4) candies. The experts in the Taste of Home Test Kitchen reviewed and tested the recipes, selecting the top 16—four from each category—based on taste, visual appeal, creativity, and crowd appeal.

The recipe with the most votes in each category will be a category winner. Three category winners will receive $250, and the grand prize winner (with the all-around most votes) will win $500 plus a spotlight in a print and digital edition of Taste of Home. From March 30 to April 14, the public will have a chance to vote for their favorite finalist recipes at Each voter is allowed one (1) vote per recipe every 24-hours during the voting period. Winners will be announced in mid-April. 

“This recipe contest was fun.  Molly is so excited our recipe is a finalist,” said Tharrington.  Their dessert, which is described as ‘sweet-and-tangy,’ is a finalist in the pudding, ice-cream, and gelatin desserts category.

Deborah Tharrington is a registered adult member of Girl Scouts and has been a “Girl Scout Mom” for the past seven years.  She has three daughters in Girl Scouts and enjoys her time supporting her girls’ troops and serving as a troop chaperone when needed.  Her daughter, Molly, first joined Girl Scouts in Kindergarten and is currently a Girl Scout Junior (grades 4-5). 

When asked what she enjoyed most about Girl Scouts, Tharrington replied, “I love all the activities [my daughters] do with the Girl Scouts, especially the service projects.  I also like that they get to experience camps and other outdoor activities.”
