Girl Scouts – North Carolina Coastal Pines has received a $10,000 donation from Time Warner Cable to support its STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) initiative.
“Girl Scouts has a proud history of supporting girls’ interest in science, technology, engineering and math through our robust programs and mentoring initiatives,” said Lisa Jones, chief executive officer at Girl Scouts – North Carolina Coastal Pines. “We are excited to partner with Time Warner Cable to provide fun and engaging ways for girls to learn about STEM.”
STEM is a core focus area for Girl Scouts and the organization is working to introduce girls of every age to STEM experiences relevant to everyday life. Whether girls are discovering how a car engine runs, how to manage finances, or exploring STEM careers, Girl Scouts wants to help girls fast-forward into the future.
With the donation from Time Warner Cable’s Connect A Million Minds initiative, Girl Scouts – North Carolina Coastal Pines will work to provide opportunities for girls during 2014 to help them gain exposure to and further participate in a variety of STEM programs.
According to the 2012 Girl Scout Research Institute report, Generation STEM: What Girls Say about Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math, the majority of today’s girls have a clear interest in STEM subjects, and are also interested in helping people and making the world a better place. However, girls and women continue to be underrepresented in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math. The U.S. Department of Commerce reported that women today hold more than 48% of the jobs in the U.S. workforce; yet, they hold fewer than 25% of the jobs in STEM fields.
“Girls Scouts is committed to engaging girls in STEM activities and encouraging them to pursue STEM interests both in and outside the classroom,” added Jones. “With the support from Time Warner Cable’s Connect A Million Minds project, it is our hope that girls will recognize that they can both succeed and enjoy careers in these important fields for our future.”
