Caroling for Cans - Girl Scouts from Wake 19 and 23 will be participating in Caroling for Cans at the State Capitol during the State Tree Lighting and Holiday Ceremony on Thursday, December 10 beginning at 5:00 p.m. The girls will carol on the Capitol grounds and collect non-perishable food items for local food banks.

If your troop is interested in supporting the Girl Scouts by joining in the caroling, please contact Deanna J. Mitchell via email at deanna.kerrigan@ncdcr.gov as soon as possible. The doors of the Capitol will close at 5:00 p.m. that day so it will be imperative that you arrive prior to 4:45 p.m.! The Girl Scouts will be caroling by the East (main) entrance (facing Wilmington Street). They will NOT be in front of the Christmas tree. Song books will be passed out to all Girl Scouts to share. Governor Beverly Perdue is VERY interested in Girl Scout participation and will be making acknowledgement of your participation from the podium!! Please have all girls wear their uniforms and they may want to wear festive apparel such as a Santa hat, reindeer ears, etc. Please note that the caroling will take place from 5:15 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. The actual tree lighting ceremony will begin at 6:15 p.m.

There will be music, free carriage rides and tours of the Capitol and Executive Mansion for the Girl Scouts to enjoy!  It should be a fun event for the girls and a great public relations opportunity for Girl Scouts - North Carolina Coastal Pines.

For any questions (and to register your troop to join in the fun) email contact Deanna J. Mitchell via email at deanna.kerrigan@ncdcr.gov

Please see below for a clip of the press release from the North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources:

RALEIGH - The tree-lighting tradition at the State Capitol will continue when Gov. Bev Perdue and First Gentleman Bob Eaves light the Christmas tree on Thursday, Dec. 10. The Junior Women's Club and State Capitol staff sponsors this free, public celebration. It starts at 5 p.m. with luminaries being lit and holiday music by the Kernersville Glenn High School Chorus. The governor and first gentleman will move to the South grounds at 6:15 p.m. to officially begin the ceremony. The lit tree will be visible the length of Fayetteville Street.

"Local performers will entertain guests on the Capitol grounds and Bicentennial Plaza after the tree lighting. The Raleigh Concert Band, local sports mascots, and even Santa will join the celebration," says Site Manager Deanna Mitchell. Free carriage rides will be available and Girl Scouts will be "Caroling for Cans" to seek food donations for the local food bank. The Capitol and many others of the 27 state historic sites will offer free holiday programs. Now you can take a virtual tour of the bakery and see the entire baking process in just six minutes by clicking this link: http://www.abcsmartcookies.com/aboutBakeryTourVideo.asp   Have a fun trip!

REMINDER
Cookie Merchandise for Sale! - We are pleased to announce that cookie merchandise will be available for purchase at cost through December 14, 2009!  Items include mylar and latex balloons, tablecloths, flags, car magnets, and yard signs - all great tools to help Girl Scouts sell cookies!  Troops can pick up merchandise with their initial cookie orders (February 10-13).  In order to make this process as simple and efficient as possible all orders need to be placed by Girl Scout troops and must be picked up at initial delivery.  (If individual parents are interested in purchasing merchandise they may do so through their troop.)

The council shops will also carry cookie merchandise, but they're not planning to carry any of the items on the attached Cookie Merchandise flyer, so this may be the only opportunity to purchase these items this year.  Just go to www.nccoastalpines.org, and click on Cookies (then click Cookies again) or click this link http://www.nccoastalpines.org/home/CookiesProducts/Cookies.aspx to download the brochure and order form.

Questions should be sent to cookies@nccoastalpines.org.  Happy shopping!
