United Way honors longtime girl scout volunteer martha webb
September 24, 2010
The Women's Leadership Council (WLC) of United Way of the Greater Triangle has honored longtime Girl Scout volunteer Martha Webb of Raleigh with its 2010 Women Leader Award.
The award recognizes women from the greater Triangle who give freely of their time, talents and resources to help improve people’s lives and who have made significant contributions to their community. Special consideration is given to women who have worked with or on behalf of young teenage girls.
Webb is a lifelong Girl Scout who has given 37 years of exemplary adult service to girls and young women in scouting. Since 1973 she has been an operational volunteer in three different Girl Scout councils as a troop leader, day camp director, service unit manager, council trainer, older girl program committee member, and a member of the Girl Scout Gold and Silver Awards committee.
According to Webb's nomination for the award, "From her earliest days as a non-traditional Girl Scout adult volunteer, nothing has been closer to Martha’s heart than ensuring that every girl, everywhere has the opportunity to be a Girl Scout."
In honor of her extraordinary service, Girl Scouts - North Carolina Coastal Pines this year announced the "Martha A. Webb Every Girl, Everywhere Fund," which helps cover the cost of sending deserving girls to Girl Scout resident camp.
"For many years, this woman has given her all to Girl Scouting. Her contributions have been recognized locally and nationally as evidenced by the accolades she has received, but more importantly by the lives she has touched," said Girl Scouts - North Carolina Coastal Pines Board Chair Bernadette Spong.
Webb has been instrumental in opening doors of opportunity for countless girls. Last year 17,710 girls from under-resourced families and communities experienced the benefits of scouting programs. Girl Scout board members describe Webb as compassionate, thoughtful and a facilitative leader who always puts girls first.
Webb has served on the Girl Scout board of directors, chaired the policy task group and the democratic process task group, worked as a member of the bylaws task group and was a delegate to national meetings in 1996, 1999, 2002 and 2008. Nationally she has served on the Girl Scouts of the USA Open Space-Strategy Cafe Project Design Team, developed the national realignment handbook and to this day continues to serve on the National Charter Design Steering Team and Charter Taskforce.
