Houston, here we come!
Thousands of Girl Scouts will descend upon Houston, Texas, Nov. 8-13, 2011, for the 52nd National Convention, which includes the 2011 National Council Session and Girl Scout Leadership Institute. And of those thousands, 18 will be from our Girl Scouts - North Carolina Coastal Pines!
During the council session, GSNCCP delegates and official visitors will participate in governance meetings. GSNCCP delegates are John Braun (Wake), Helen Brockett (Cumberland), Sylvia Brooks (Durham), Carly Collette (Orange), Rebecca Daniels (Durham), Michelle Lewis (Harnett), Natalie Malpass (Columbus), Matthew Markie (Chatham), Joyce Mitchell (Pitt), Grazia Mostella (Wayne), Ami Patel (Wake), Rusine Mitchell Sinclair (Wake), Cynthia Sortisio (Durham), Bernadette Spong (Wake), Lisa Strickland (Brunswick), Aaliyah Tate (Wayne), Ada Taylor (Durham), and Jean Turlington (Sampson).
Over the course of the governance meetings, delegates will elect the officers and members at large who will take Girl Scouts into the next century; provide input on the major policy issues facing Girl Scouts today; vote on proposals (including an amendment to the Girl Scout Constitution); and approve the stewardship report from the present board summarizing its work. Official visitors may attend the governance meetings but do not vote.
Eight Girl Scouts from our Council -- Carly Collette, Rebecca Dietrich (Wake), Natalie Malpass, Ami Patel, Hannah Przelomski (Nash), Aaliyah Tate, Ada Taylor, and Jean Turlington -- will represent GSNCCP and the girls' voices when they participate in the Girl Scout Leadership Institute.
This year's GSLI theme, "Leadership and Innovation, the Next 100 Years," will stimulate the girls to think big. Focus areas will include global connections; innovation in marketing, business, and technology and science; and leadership. The Institute runs concurrently with the National Council Session, and the girls will join the larger group for the opening and closing ceremonies, Conversations of Consequence, and help launch the 100th Anniversary Take Action Project: Girl Scouts Forever Green.
The Girl Scout Leadership Experience engages girls in a lifelong journey that builds qualities such as self-esteem, positive values, critical thinking, community spirit, and the ability to inspire and take action. In so doing, girls learn to discover themselves, connect with others, and take action to make the world a better place.
Girl Scouts is celebrating 100 years in 2012, and it's time to get the party started in Houston! Katie Couric will kick off the festivities during the opening ceremony, and the 100th Anniversary parties for girls and adults will be held Saturday night, Nov. 12. The closing ceremony will bring an end to the convention but will launch the organization into celebrating our milestone throughout 2012.
We’ll keep you posted on all of the happenings at the 2011 National Council Session straight from our delegates and official visitors in Houston. Beginning Nov. 10, be sure to check out our posts on Twitter and on Facebook.
