Golden Corral gift to create new Girl Scout troops in eastern Wake County

Girl Scouts - North Carolina Coastal Pines is pleased to announce that it has received a $56,000 donation over two years from Golden Corral Corporation. The donation will be used to help make Girl Scouting more accessible to girls living in The Housing Authority of the County of Wake's (HACW) public housing communities, who otherwise might not be able to experience the benefits of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience

"Golden Corral believes in the importance of giving back to local charities, schools and non-profit organizations in support of local communities," said Easter Maynard, head of charitable giving for Golden Corral. "We believe in the strong programs that Girl Scouting offers to girls and young women. This gift offers
girls the opportunity to experience a traditional Girl Scout troop, which we feel is so important to the girls' long-term success."

The donation will help build four new Girl Scout troops in public housing in Garner, Wendell and Zebulon -- thereby removing barriers to girls living in these communities.

Shawna Peaks of Girl Scouts - North Carolina Coastal Pines; Cindy Privette of Zebulon United Methodist Church; Burnetta J. Smith of The Housing Authority of the County of Wake; and Easter Maynard of Golden Corral Corporation, celebrate bringing the gift of Girl Scouting to girls in eastern Wake County.

"In this way, girls from under-resourced families can experience the life-changing opportunities provided by Girl Scouting right in their own community," said Rusine Mitchell Sinclair, chief executive officer for Girl Scouts - North Carolina Coastal Pines.

"We welcome the opportunity for girls in our communities to experience the fun, friendship, and phenomenal leadership experiences that Girl Scout troops offer," said Burnetta J. Smith, HACW executive director.

The Zebulon United Methodist Church has agreed to provide transportation for this initiative, thereby eliminating another major barrier to youth participating in Girl Scout activities.

"Creating an inclusive Girl Scout community is one of our highest priorities. We are so grateful for Golden Corral's long-time support in helping bring Girl Scouting to all girls," Sinclair said. "With this generous donation and the resulting partnerships, we will be able to deliver the Girl Scout troop experience to more young women, particularly among families with limited resources, in these communities."

The Girl Scout Leadership Experience engages girls in a lifelong journey that builds qualities such as self-esteem, positive values, critical thinking, community spirit, and the ability to inspire and take action. In so doing, girls learn to discover themselves, connect with others, and take action to make the world a better place.
