State Capitol Christmas trees honor 100 years of Girl Scouting

Thanks to North Carolina Girl Scouts' creativity, four Christmas trees on the second floor of the State Capitol will celebrate 100 years of Girl Scouting. Girl Scouts from throughout the 41 counties that constitute Girl Scouts - North Carolina Coastal Pines made dozens of ornaments to ring in the next century of building girls of courage, confidence and character.

The trees and ornaments will be unveiled during the State Tree Lighting Ceremony and Holiday Festival on the grounds of the State Capitol on Thursday, Dec. 8, from 5 to 7:30 p.m.

The trees will remain decorated through Dec. 29. The State Capitol is open Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Capitol will be closed Dec. 24-27.

Visitors to the State Capitol may also wish to take in At the Speed of a Girl - Celebrating 100 Years of Girl Scouting at the NC Museum of History. Focusing on the history of Girl Scouts in North Carolina, this small exhibit developed by Girl Scouts - North Carolina Coastal Pines brings the past to the present. Admission and weekend parking are free.

Museum hours are Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, noon to 5 p.m. The museum will have extended hours on Dec. 8 and remain open until 7:30 p.m.
