Martha Webb swears in Bernadette Spong as Council Chair
After the gavel was passed, Bernadette Spong spoke of her priorities as incoming GS-NCCP chair. An excerpt from her remarks follows:
“I am truly amazed and humbled by the work that [Girl Scouting] accomplishes in our communities. It is in that spirit of giving that I want our next years to focus on solidifying a culture of giving. Our council has been blessed by strong cookie sales which have supported our girl programs. This has served us well over the years, [but] we cannot rely on only this revenue stream to sustain our council for the future. We will need more to ensure we can grow and mold our programs as our girls desire. We must successfully develop a culture of giving.
Our brand is strong, our heritage is excellent and our voices are loud. Over the next years we are poised to strengthen our brand with 100th Anniversary celebrations planned not only in this council but throughout the United States. 100 years strong is an excellent statement about the sustainability of Girl Scouting. Revel in our accomplishments and commit to be an even larger player in our second century. Remember: only 737 days until our 100th anniversary on March 12, 2012!”

Leigh Duque and Cindy Kelley-Deaton present the 100th Anniversary breakout session
The business meeting adjourned, and volunteers made their way to the break-out sessions: What’s New in Program and Technology?, presented by Leslie Flood; 100th Anniversary in 2012, presented by Cindy Kelley and Leigh Duque; and Council Property Update, presented by Harold Keen and John Braun.

Proud Girl Scout volunteers hold up their award plaques after the Annual Meeting Luncheon
The Annual Adult Recognitions Program was held during the Annual Meeting luncheon. Each year our Council honors the efforts and achievements of volunteers by presenting awards for outstanding service. What makes this recognition so inspiring and meaningful is that the honorees have been nominated by their peers for going above and beyond the expectations of their position descriptions. To view the full list of honorees click here. Congratulations to all award recipients.

The final tribute of the day was given to retiring chair Martha Webb, whose many contributions to Girl Scouting have been recognized locally and nationally as evidenced by the accolades she has received (Tar Heel of the Week, Thanks Badge and Thanks Badge II). Bernadette Spong announced on behalf of the Council the creation of the Martha A. Webb Every Girl, Everywhere Fund, made possible by financial gifts in recognition of Martha’s service to Girl Scouts. “No tribute could be more fitting than to honor Martha is this way. The first awards from the Martha A. Webb Every Girl Everywhere Fund will be made to deserving girls in our council for their participation at one of our Girl Scout resident camps this summer,” stated Spong.
Thank you to all who attended the 3rd Annual GS-NCCP meeting and many thanks to our Girl Scout volunteers who work tirelessly to “build girls of courage, confidence and character who make the world a better place.”
