Congratulations to Lauren Cunningham (Pitt), Megan Young (Lenoir) and Alexis Ford (Wayne-Greene), our top three cookie sellers who together sold an amazing 6,550 boxes of Girl Scout Cookies. Wow – and thank you! I look forward to meeting you and thanking you each in person.

Here is some really big news from GSUSA: We’re launching “What Did You Do Today,” a multicultural public awareness and outreach campaign focusing on the experiences girls can have as Girl Scouts. During the July 6 (2:30 pm) launch event, Venus Williams will be at GSUSA headquarters to talk to Girl Scouts and key members of the media about why she wants to be part of the new brand campaign. She’ll also present the new Girl Scout ad she’s featured in. The launch event will be streamed online via Ustream so we can all watch it live. Join us at http://www.ustream.tv/channel/brand-launch.

Summer Camp 2010 is in full swing and the early word is that the girls are loving it! Transformers at CMA runs July 11-16 and girls grades 6-9 will spend the week exploring the world of technology and engineering through hands-on activities (such as building a robot) and enjoying STEM-focused field trips in the Triangle area. Our next specialty camp is August 1-6, Discover the Leader in You! Leadership Camp at CMA. Middle school girls will join together with girls from other United Way youth-serving agencies to delve into leadership exploration, spend a day at Meredith College, and enjoy mentoring opportunities with women professionals.

The Administrative Team Conference is August 7 at Campbell University, so be sure to mark your calendars and save the date. And while you’ve got your calendars out, Fall Leaderee is scheduled for October 1-3 at CMA.

Don’t be left out: More than 6,000 girls and adult members have already used our new online membership registration to renew membership or join Girl Scouts. All members should renew their memberships by September 30 in order to stay current in the system and register for council-sponsored events online in the fall. Help is available at helpdesk@nccoastalpines.org.

One last reminder that high school juniors and seniors are encouraged to enter an essay contest on the Bill of Rights. Seven girls nationally will be chosen to each receive a $3,000 college scholarship. Entries are due July 30th. Find more information: http://www.womenlegislators.org/events/scholarship-program.php. As part of your application, you must be sponsored by a woman legislator. To find the names of all the women currently elected to the North Carolina General Assembly, click on http://www.ncga.state.nc.us/homePage.pl.

The August deadlines are nearing for submitting nominations for the Governor's Volunteer Service Awards. Our volunteers are at the very heart of Girl Scouting and this is your chance to recognize some of Girl Scouting’s finest. Please contact your county NC Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service volunteer awards coordinator to confirm the local deadline for submitting nominations and procedures. If your county does not have a coordinator or if you have questions, contact Tim Kelly at the Commission: 919.715.2279 or Tim.Kelly@nc.gov. Let us know of any Girl Scouts recognized with a Governor's Volunteer Service Award, so we can share the information council-wide.

Happy birthday to our nation – and stay cool on these hot summer days!
