April 2011

By generating more than $10.3 million in total gross sales, the 2011 Girl Scout Cookie Sale ended a full eight percent over last year's sale. Wow! We've exceeded every goal we set.

Just as exciting: we'll be donating more than 100,000 boxes of our best cookies to our military troops overseas! We’re in the midst of setting our Operation Cookie Drop delivery dates to the Give2TheTroops® organization in Pitt County, the USO in Jacksonville and Raleigh, Seymour Johnson in Goldsboro, and Fort Bragg in Fayetteville. As soon as we have all of the dates firmed up, we'll let you know.

We had a strong Spring Leaderee at Camp Mary Atkinson earlier in the month. Close to 250 Girl Scouts joined together to show that they are indeed Strong Volunteers - Sharing our Strengths. I understand that many of our attendees were first-timers, which goes to show that volunteerism is alive and well in our council. We are all grateful to each of you and look forward to working together for many years to come!

Our 2011 Girl Scout Cookies and Milk Reception for members of the General Assembly and legislative staff was a great success. Girl Scouts and legislators from across North Carolina attended. Both the North Carolina House and the North Carolina Senate honored Juliette Gordon Low, the Girl Scout Movement and Girl Scouts throughout North Carolina. It was a great day and a great way to kick off the countdown to our 100th anniversary!

Thanks to everyone for a wonderful 2011 Annual Meeting in Fayetteville. More than 205 Girl Scouts attended and heard Senator Margaret Dickson's keynote address.

Coming September 2011: The Girl's Guide to Girl Scouting (six publications - one for each grade level.) The Guide will include badge offerings, traditions and history, an awards log, and more.

Also in the fall of 2011, all earned recognitions (Try-Its, badges and IPs) will be called Badges, although Daisies will still continue to earn Petals. The five new badge categories are:

  • Legacy (engaging girls in topics relevant since 1912);
  • Financial Literacy (using money wisely);
  • Cookie Business;
  • Skill Building; and
  • Make Your Own (exploring your own personal interests).
More information about all this exciting news will follow in the next few months!
