Summary: Amanda held a book drive to benefit local organizations including the Boys and Girls Club. She then created story hours, including games and sing-alongs, at the Jordan Child and Family Enrichment Center and Creative Kidz Academy. For parents, she created a brochure about the importance of reading aloud to children including a list of local libraries and instructions for obtaining a library card.

Summary: Corinne worked with Grow and Share, a nonprofit organization dedicated to fighting hunger. She grew 1,000 vegetable plants from seeds which she distributed to church members. Those receiving plants donated over 1,690 fresh fruits and vegetables for hunger relief. She also created a pamphlet to educate the community on the benefits of local food production and sustainable farming, the problem of hunger in America, and ways to get involved with hunger relief.

Summary: Catherine created a new hiking trail in Lake Crabtree park. The new trail replaced an older trail that had a problem with erosion and standing water. Upon completion of the new trail, she moved the trail indicators from the old trail to the new one and covered the old trail.

Summary: Julia organized and hosted an orchestra club at a local elementary school. Twenty 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade participants learned how to play the stringed instrument of their choice.

Summary: Rachel built the only library in the community of Tabon-Tabon, the Philippines. She organized and catalogued all of the donated books. She coordinated volunteers to build and paint shelves, tables, and desks. Then, she worked with local Girl Scouts to organize the ceremony where she dedicated the library in a speech to 500 community residents.

She completely rejuvenated the garden patch outside of the house by adding garden accessories and by planting low-maintenance perennial flowers. In addition, she added colorful handmade cushions and various decorative accents to the family room.

Summary: Georgia organized an art event to raise awareness of the plights of homeless dogs. At the event, she displayed painted dog houses as well as portraits of rescued dogs and their owners. Visitors were encouraged to bring items to donate to the Lab Resuce of NC, the NCSU Vet School, and the SPCA of Wake County.

Summary: Konstandena rejuvenated the children's playground at the Lower Cape Fear Hospice & Life Care Center. She also planted a butterfly garden around the playground for the families, caregivers and patients to enjoy.

Summary: Elizabeth created a program to focus on the problem of low literacy rates in North Carolina. She recorded about 60 books onto CDs to donate to the Communities in Schools of (CIS) Wake County. She also started an afterschool reading program at CIS Wake and donated 200 books for the children to start their own at home libraries.

Summary: Cassandra created a recycling program for athletic events at Holly Springs High School. The program involved taking several recycling bins from inside the school and placing them in the stadiums and fields during sporting events. She cleaned up the stadium after events by collecting bottles and cans and placing them in the recycling bins to be recycled. Cassandra replaced the bags in the recycling bins and returned them to their appropriate location before the start of the next school day.

Summary: Kelsea created a lesson plan with young children at the Boys & Girls Club in Beaufort, Ann Street UMC Preschool and Beaufort Historic Site. She tied activities to different books that related to the Beaufort community and surrounding area. She read to about 150 children throughout the three locations.

Each box contains personal mementos and information about the resident so that employees, volunteers, visitors and other residents with memory disabilities can learn about the resident and gain insight into their personalities.

Summary: Paige created four campsites at Johnson's Park in West End at the Youth Lodge. She made trails from the camps to the main shelter and to the other camps. At each campsite she built a picnic table for that site. She also put signs of local plants and trees that surrounded the grounds.

Summary: Lucy built ten wood duck boxes, which were donated to Cape Fear River Watch. She also held a birdhouse event for third- through fifth-graders at Wesley Memorial UMC's summer camp. She constructed each birdhouse and then deconstructed the houses, organizing the pieces into kits for each participant. During the event, she taught the participants about the importance of environmentalism.

Summary: Megan interviewed residents at Glenaire, a local assisted living facility, and collected a photo of each. She compiled the biographical information and photos into a Memory Book for the residents and staff to get better acquainted with one another.

She taught the students about communicable diseases, healthy eating habits, exercise, maintaining a clean environment, and personal hygiene. She also collected donations of toothbrushes, toothpaste, floss and hand sanitizer from local dentists and physicians, which she distributed to the students.

She also compiled a detailed list of all OB/GYN offices in Wake County to use in supplying current information to doctors and patients regarding Down Syndrome.

Summary: Sage organized and hosted the environmental portion of a science and environmental camp at First Baptist Church for six third- and fourth-grade girls. Participants made journals from paper grocery bags, learned about protecting the environment, and planted seeds to start their own gardens at home.

Summary: Stephanie established a Sunshine Card (greeting cards) program for Meals on Wheels. The cards were created to be distributed along with meals during holidays throughout the year.

Residents of The Cypress of Raleigh learned Internet, e-mail, Microsoft Word, and basic computer skills. They also received a handbook containing useful tips as well as typed notes of their sessions.

Summary: Sarah created a self-defense booklet geared toward women and teen girls. The booklet, entitled "One Less Statistic,” includes nine self-defense techniques. Sarah also taught a class about self defense to young women using techniques she learned while researching her book.

Summary: In an effort to encourage young girls in science, Claire planned and hosted an event called "Scientifically Challenging Incredible-Females Individually (SCI-FI), where girls participated in science-related activities. Participants learned how to make and launch bottle rockets, and also learned about impact lunar craters, electricity, and the human body. She also informed the girls' parents about additional opportunities to expand the girls' science education.

She also refurbished four used sitting benches by replacing the wood, carriage bolts, and nuts on all of them and then repainting the bench frames.
