AWARDS & SCHOLARSHIPS
prudential spirit of community
Nominations are being sought for the 2009 Prudential Spirit of Community Award. Our Girl Scout council has the opportunity to nominate girls in grades 5-8 and 9-12. The award recognizes young people in middle and high school grades for outstanding volunteer service to their communities. Because Girl Scouts do an excellent job of giving back to their communities, our girls are excellent candidates to be considered for this honor. Specifically, due to the nature of the high quality service provided, girls who have recently earned the Girl Scout Gold or Silver Award make strong candidates.
Our council will have the opportunity to select Local Honorees who will be nominated for state-level judging. Top state-level honorees will receive an all-expense paid trip to the nation’s capital for several days of national recognition events as well as a $1,000 award. Then nationally, the top 10 youth volunteers will receive an additional $5,000 award plus a $5,000 grant for a non-profit of their choice.
Girl Scouts can apply online at www.prudential.com/spirit. Applications must be completed, printed out, signed and submitted to Cindy Kelley-Deaton, Program Executive at the Raleigh Girl Scout office (P.O. Box 52294, Raleigh, NC 27612) by October 31, 2008. You may call toll-free 877-525-8491 to have a paper version of the application form sent to you.
We hope you will encourage Girl Scouts who have demonstrated a commitment to community service to apply. It is a wonderful opportunity for their remarkable work to be recognized.
If you have questions, you can check out the Prudential web site above or contact Cindy Kelley-Deaton, cdeaton@nccoastalpines.org or 800-284-4475.
Project Advisor for Girl Scout Gold and Silver Award Projects
The Girl Scout Silver Award and the Girl Scout Gold Award are the highest awards a girl in Girl Scouting can earn at ages 11-14 and 14-18. Each represents a process and commitment to developing and using leadership skills to affect a positive change in a girl's community. By indicating your interest in acting as a project advisor, you are taking the first step toward helping a young woman become an asset to her community. The volunteer experience involves a commitment of time and a mentoring relationship to help a girl succeed in her goal setting, planning, and the actual fulfillment of her project. If you are interested, fill out the advisor form and a representative from our council will get in touch with you. We provide coaching and resources to make this a very fulfilling experience for all involved.
