CAMP Mary Atkinson

Bouldering is a style of rock climbing done without a rope and normally limited to very short climbs over a safety surface so that a fall will not result in serious injury. It is typically practiced on large natural or artificial boulders or on walls in gyms.

The Camp Mary Atkinson Grotto is a unique bouldering facility that offers six separate, 8’ high walls (faces) equipped with diverse hand and footholds.  Placement of the holds and a diamond shaped opening in the back wall allows the climber to climb inside and out on all six sides without ever touching the ground, offering challenges for the beginner and the advanced climber.  The Grotto s located in the area of the Alpine Tower at CMA and will allow larger groups of girls to stay active and to develop new climbing skills on a low risk facility.

The structure is entirely under a metal roof and a 6” bed of pea sized river gravel provides a safe, cushioned landing surface for the climber, should she fall.

With the exception of clean shoes and a bit of chalk for the hands, no belaying or special equipment is needed to boulder.  However, all climbers should be spotted.

Spotting is provided by another participant who actively safeguards the movements of the climber by standing below and slightly away from the climber with feet firmly planted, in balance, with arms extended to support the head and shoulders of the climber, should a fall occur.  Older campers, counselors, or other adults should provide spotting for young and beginning climbers.  No climbing will be permitted without supervision.

The Grotto can accommodate multiple climbers provided there are enough spotters to ensure safety.

The Grotto was financed with the earnings of the 2008 and 2009 Fall Product sales.
