For over the last 100 years, Girl Scouts has proven to be a safe environment for girls to take healthy risks by trying new things, getting out of their comfort zone, and learning to succeed through failure. When girls experience failure in a safe and comforting environment – it has been documented to improve all aspects of their lives.
As the preeminent leadership development organization for girls, Girl Scouts provides girls with a fun and safe environment to overcome their fears, try new things, make them greater challenge seekers, thought-leaders, and eventually more successful adults.
According to the Girl Scout Research Institute (GSRI), 84% of girls say they learned or did new things in Girl Scouts, and 80% reported that in Girl Scouts they were able to do things that they could not have done in other places. Through unique leadership experiences, girls become more active and engaged learners, develop a positive sense of self, and learn resourceful problem solving. They learn no challenge is too great, no impact is too small, and as a Girl Scout anything is possible.
For example, as a Girl Scout a girl might break gender barriers and discover her inner scientist by attending STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) events, get out of her comfort zone by attending her first ever resident summer camp, or better her community through service and Take Action projects focusing on long-term impacts. The Girl Scout Leadership Experience helps girls learn not to avoid things that are hard for them, therefore helping them overcome fears, face challenges, and build resilience. Girls who are not challenge seekers—who tend to “avoid doing things that are hard for me”—are less likely to feel scholastically competent and academically engaged. Cooperative learning and girl-led experiences in Girl Scouts help girls become world-changers.
Girl Scouts offers life-changing leadership opportunities, giving all girls the chance to develop a strong sense of self, engage in innovative problem-solving, show fearlessness in the face of adversity, and demonstrate inclusion and collaboration across all facets of their lives. When a girl joins Girl Scouts she can take her skills, passions, and interests, and leave her mark and legacy on the world – for the better. Girl Scouts provides girls with the space to support their ideas, develop grit and determination, seek out new challenges and adventures, and demonstrate creative-thinking and innovation.
