Girl Scouts Breakdown Gender Barriers at Summer Science Camp

Girl Scouts Cadettes and Seniors from the North Carolina Coastal Pines council explored the world of science at Summer Science Camp. The camp served over 60 girls in grades 6 through 10 at Meredith College and provided them with the hands-on activities that help ignite their interest and passion in the vast and exciting world of science.

Girl Scout Summer Science Camp helps girls discover, create, and solve in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) while encouraging girls to bridge the existing gender gap within these male-dominant career fields. Summer Science camp provides a week of girl-led experiences while emphasizing the importance of leadership programming designed to promote girl’s confidence and skills across science fields.

Throughout the course of the week, girls worked with professional women from across STEM fields, including industry leaders SAS, Cisco, and Google Fiber, to create and launch their own rockets, participate in chemistry lab experiments resulting in homemade bath products, makeup and organic bug repellent, learn about astronomy and forensics, and more.

According to the Girl Scout Research Institute (GSRI), early exposure to STEM activities can put a girl on the path to a lifetime of success and help her make the world a better place! Girls who participate in Girl Scout STEM programs learn to overcome challenges and solve problems, gain confidence, build leadership skills, earn better grades, and excel as team players who are better prepared to take on the future.

When girls attend Girl Scout Summer Science Camp, they have the opportunity to combine STEM learning with leadership development, growth mindset development, and other socially desirable skills in a flexible, informal environment that supports girl-driven exploration and experimentation.
